Some of us are managing like Michael Scott

Hi, Reader

Some of us are managing like Michael Scott from The Office.

Just out here declaring buzzwords like
“We just need better alignment”
aka the corporate version of “thoughts and prayers.”

“Alignment” shows up in every business conversation these days…
but half the time, no one even agrees on what it means.

Is it about getting buy-in?
Keeping everyone informed?
Making sure people follow the same process?
Agreeing on the plan?

Those are four completely different things.

When leaders start defaulting to buzzwords like alignment, engagement, or accountability—without further context or explanation—what they’re really saying is:

“Something’s off and we can’t quite name it.”
“We had a meeting and hoped that would fix it.”
“We’re trying to sound like we’re doing something.”

Let’s call it what it is:

🔹 “Alignment” is just corporate talk for “we haven’t clarified the goal.”
🔹“Strategy” is code for “we’re still winging it but it sounds smart.”
🔹“Engagement” often means “people seem tired and we haven’t asked them why.”
🔹“Accountability” usually means “nothing’s getting done and no one knows who owns it.”

The truth is you don’t fix performance with vague language.
You fix it with clarity, execution, and ownership.

Your turn:
What’s one buzzword you keep hearing in meetings that still has you scratching your head?

What word would you gladly erase from every agenda?

Hit reply and let me know. Let’s brainstorm how to fix the actual friction—buzzwords uninvited.
