Business should be simple. And fun. |
Last year, I worked with a business that was trying to sort out its management team, new processes, and some badly needed admin help.
The owner brought in someone senior to help set direction and build strategy… but instead of leading the big picture, they got pulled into the weeds every single day.
Scheduling issues.
Customer complaints.
Little SOPs for one-off problems.
They felt like they were needed in every fire. But what actually happened?
The real outcomes they wanted (like a stronger team, clarity, and growth), kept getting pushed aside.
They were so zoomed in on trivial issues that all they built were band-aid fixes.
And if I’m being honest? This isn’t just their problem. It's not even a unique problem.
At least once a quarter, I catch myself obsessing over something that’s either (a) not a real problem or (b) not *my* problem.
What helped them move forward (and what I remind myself to do):
- Hand off admin details to someone who can own them.
- Equip managers to solve their own problems.
- Set boundaries: if a problem can’t be solved in 15 minutes (or less), pause and ask if it’s even yours to solve.
Because when you stay too zoomed in, you miss the bigger picture...and you end up spinning your wheels dealing with the same problems over and over again.
